Rashid Johnson
Rashid Johnson's Untitled Broken Crowd is an intricate mosaic made of tile, mirrors, and wood, and depicting wild and agitated faces that are both metaphorically and physically fractured. The artwork embodies the complex emotions that arise during times of social change. The grid-like rows of blocky faces are disrupted by the chaos of erratically placed tiles, streaks of paint, and globs of soap that slash across the surface. We can feel the anxiety of these lonesome faces--blocked off from physical connection by thick bands of white tile which separate each face from the other. Johnson has stated of this work that, "at this moment in time, we're experiencing a deeper sense of urgency, distance, and isolation than ever before. This piece brings that new reality to life on a grand scale."
