Celeste Dupuy-Spencer
Celeste Dupuy-Spencer's paintings draw inspiration from both personal experiences and media. Her art often incorporates ceremonies and rituals, which she uses to explore the impact of power structures--like the patriarchy--on the American experience. In her work, she often portrays various religious scenes, including baptisms, glossolalia, and the invocation of the Holy Spirit. For instance, in Through the Laying of the Hands (Positively Demonic Dynamism), an evangelist pastor exorcises the evil spirits that inhabit the soul of a congregant--in this case, by speaking in tongues. Meanwhile the pastor’s assistant places their hand on the central figure’s violently pumping heart which in turn glows a pale yellow. The congregation surrounds this scene: some laying their hands on the figure speaking in tongues while others lift their arms and bear witness to the event as it unfolds.
