Doron Langberg
Doron Langberg, a prominent voice among his generation of painters, is known for his luminous large-scale paintings, often portraying erotic scenes, and celebrating the human experience through the physicality of touch. Like many of us, Langberg finds a safe harbor in his family, friends, and lovers in a world where he is surrounded by uncertainty and inequity. As a Queer Jewish man, Langberg has said that his faith and identity have helped him to learn to be appreciative and mindful of the gift of the present moment. In Lovers, Langberg depicts an everyday scene of a small moment intimacy between two individuals: their bodies surrounded by swirling whisps of paint that instill a dream-like quality on the otherwise voyeuristic scene. While the event seems mundane, it reminds us of the beauty and value of love and physical connection--particularly amongst queer people whose tenuous and loving touches are constantly at risk of being banned or condemned.
