Cruisers #5 is part of an ongoing series of paintings by Steve Locke, which delve into the concept of "cruising," a practice primarily associated with gay men. In cruising, individuals drive around a specific area, typically known within the LGBTQ+ community, in search of a brief and often anonymous sexual encounter, typically in public spaces. This practice has roots dating back to the 1960s and has been used by gay men throughout history as a way to connect with partners discreetly, reducing the risk of drawing attention that could lead to danger. Due to the secretive nature of cruising, it can be both exhilarating and perilous for those involved. In this particular work, Cruisers #5, Locke captures an intense and intimate moment between two figures who are engaged in the act of looking and being seen. The painting is saturated with unspoken tension, allowing viewers to sense the anticipation, desire, fear, and unease emanating from the depicted figures.
