Carlo D’Anselmi came to The Cabin LA in November 2020 in the early months of the COVID-19  pandemic. First arranged for D’Anselmi to take the train all the way from Brooklyn to Los Angeles as  they both felt this was the safest option. Among the artworks D’Anselmi made during his residency is  this stunning work, entitled The Gift, that depicts a statuesque individual relaxing while holding a  pheasant-like bird. Interestingly, the bird’s feathers mimic the colors of the American flag; perhaps  drawing a connection the state of our country at that time ⎯ longing for freedom from the pandemic  but huddling close while waiting out the infection.
