Often drawing from emotional experiences, childhood memories, or single inanimate objects, Simon  Demeuter’s works are exacting and joyful. First was drawn to his stripped down but striking style and  was eager to see what Demeuter would bring to the residency. Here, in Diego #8, a portrait of First’s adorable hairless dog, the titular subject faces away from us looking out into a pale void full of red  cactus-like forms that mimic the shape of Diego’s tail. Each form, each brushstroke, and each color is  chosen meticulously to create a bold composition with a staggering impact. Demeuter is represented  by L21 Gallery.
