Tschabalala Self
Harlem-born Tschabalala Self has garnered a great deal of notoriety and recognition in recent years. With articles about her in Vogue, NPR, The New York Times, and Forbes. Self’s creative style of combining painting, printmaking, sewing, and collage allows her to create multi-layered and textured pieces. This variable surface is constructive to her interest in depicting the body and in exploring how that body can be arranged. In particular, Self frequently portrays the Black female body in the nude in way which is not bound to the expectations of Western femininity, but that depicts these figures as complex people wrapped in emotions both negative and positive. This piece, entitled Red Room, was a part of a series of works Self made that investigates the self, the home, and furniture and fashions a scene where these three things meld into one. The crushed velvet and rich colors create a sense of sumptuousness. Self says of this work “I find her to be a mischievous character…so there’s this idea that she’s slippery ⎯ silky and inviting.” Self is represented by Pilar Corrias and Galerie Eva Presenhuber.
