Erin Lawlor
Enamored with paint, Erin Lawlor is a self-taught artist who went to school for Art History and draws inspiration from the works of Frank Auerbach, Titian, Manet, and Giacometti. Lawlor’s interest in paint, and particularly in the concept popular in the Renaissance of paint as skin, has guided her practice through her shift from figurative to abstract art. Her smooth, undulating brushstrokes ripple across the canvas creating a strong sense of depth and shadow. Although some of her works include brighter colors, the palette used here in Majestic Mickey, is typical of her paintings possessing colors that are bodily, rich, and earthy. Over the years, one of the major changes to Lawlor’s practice has been the shift to a larger scale and, subsequently, the move to painting on the ground. Lawlor describes the process of painting with the canvas flat on the floor as being more physically engaging ⎯ allowing her to use her whole body and not only her hands. Lawlor is represented by Miles McEnery Gallery and Vigo Gallery.
