Aly Helyer
When First met Aly Helyer in early 2020 she was working as a full-time art teacher with a dream of one day becoming a full-time artist. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Helyer was unable to come to Los Angeles for her original residency and instead presented a show at The Cabin LA in late 2020 of works created at her London studio. Immediately following this show, Helyer gave her notice to the school where she had been working to commit to her career as an artist. In April of 2022, Helyer was finally able to travel to Los Angeles to participate in-person. This work, True Love, is a piece from Helyer’s time in LA in 2022. The dark plum tones of the background help to emphasize the shocking electric pink outlining the two figures. The horse and the person’s heads nestle together, each niche of the horse’s head fitting into that of the human figure’s face ⎯ as if they are meant to be together. In 2022, Helyer had a solo exhibition at PM/AM Gallery, and was also in shows at Galerie Hussenot and Union Gallery.
