Gommaar Gilliams
Gommaar Gilliams has emerged as a promising talent with his vibrant, colorful works typified by their bold and painterly brushwork and playful use of materiality and texture. Oscillating between abstraction and representation, Gilliams is able to create lush, seemingly timeless scenarios that appear at once familiar and fantastical ⎯ visions of a dreamlike nostalgia-laden utopia ⎯ scenes that appear like half-remembered or imagined memories filled with a sense of longing. Here, in Damaris, we see a striking example of Gilliams’ vibrant, multi-textured dreamscapes — one that draws the viewer in with its figurative appearance, and delightfully subverts our expectations with its abstract core. Gilliams is represented by De Buck Gallery where he has a show of new works through February 28th, 2023, and Gallery Sofie Van de Velde.
