Alic Brock
Alic Brock surveys the internet for images of athletes and pop culture icons to create superimposed human forms that are more in line with mosaics as opposed to traditional paintings. Growing up in Dayton, Ohio, images of celebrities served as a portal for Brock to enter more enchanting worlds. Having drawn them endlessly as a child, his fragmented compositions are a way for him to “come to grips with images of the past,” many of which have been warped from their original context. For instance, in Man Ray Brock appropriated artist Man Ray’s famous photograph, Larmes de Verre, or Glass Tears. Brock modified the photo by painting an enlarged version of it, adding eye popping colors, and reversing the image so the eyes look to the viewer’s right rather than their left. The result is an iconic work all its own. The artist speaks frequently about how transformative his time at The Cabin LA was and credits the residency with allowing him to develop his now iconic style of monumental portraiture. Brock is represented by Simchowitz Gallery.
